Red, White & Bloom: A Skagway Fourth of July

Skagway is one of the most patriotic towns I have ever been to. They have two parades on America's independence day, one of which circles the town twice.
The streets are filled with tourists and townspeople - taking part in egg tosses, duck derby's, hot dog eating contests and arm wrestling competitions.
There's something for everyone.

Skagway's Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice party is probably one of my favorite events to date - and I'm not alone.
The people of Skagway look forward to Solstice all year.
Families come out and play games, eat burgers and chat with their neighbors.
A fenced in beer garden offers beer to those of age and bands play throughout the night.
It was my first Solstice experience and I have a new found love for the longest day of the year.
I made it all the way across! With the help of a stick... so I decided to leave it to the professionals.

Flag Day: Skagway Style

Flag Day isn't just your average day in Skagway, AK. A whole section of Broadway is blocked off  and Skagway veterans stand in a circle, with United States flags from throughout the years.

Vintage rings and Yeti Tacos

Skagway has the most precious farmer's market.
It's held indoors and there aren't too many vendors, but what vendors they do have are exquisite.
From recycled bicycle parts made into jewelry to homemade candles and homegrown vegetables, the market is a delicious assortment of all that Skagway has to offer.
A highlight is the famous Yeti Taco.
It's a small but flavor packed pork taco served on two corn tortillas- yep, that's right, TWO tortillas. It's covered in a delicious sauce, which is also made locally and goes down deliciously and quickly. It'll cost you over five dollars, but it's definitely worth it.

Skagway Fish Company

One of Skagway's most prominent restaurants, The Skagway Fish Company,  caught fire in May.
Though the cause of the fire is not yet definite, arsine is thought the be the culprit.
Above, owner Dan Henry inspects and records the damage for insurance purposes.

Firehouse Car Wash

Every year, Skagway hosts a car wash and cookout. They line up the firetrucks and volunteer firefighters come out and rid Skagway's cars of dirt and grime, all while raising money.
